As you may have heard, Windows 10 will reach its end of life on October 14, 2025. This means Microsoft will cease to provide free security updates, non-security updates, and technical support for this version. However, this doesn't mean your PCs will stop working; it simply indicates that you'll need to manage your device's security and performance independently.
If you've tried upgrading to Windows 10 but encountered a compatibility error, don't worry—there are still several options available to you:
- Ignore the deadline: Although not recommended, you can choose to continue using Windows 10 without ongoing security updates, leaving your device vulnerable to cyber threats. Additionally, technical support and non-security updates will no longer be available, potentially affecting your computer's efficiency.
- Switch to Linux: If you're tech-savvy and not ready to part with your PC, consider replacing Windows 10 with the Linux operating system. Be prepared for the challenges that come with transitioning to a new OS.
- Use a technical workaround to upgrade incompatible PCs: Even if your PC failed the initial compatibility check, you might still upgrade it using a minor registry edit and ensuring it supports Secure Boot with TPM. ZDNET provides a guide for this process, but proceed with caution, as it may void warranties and leave your PC unsupported.
- Subscribe to Microsoft's Extended Security Updates (ESUs): Microsoft will offer paid security updates for Windows 10 through ESUs for up to three years. This subscription service is costly, with prices increasing each year. Note that these updates don't include technical support and are designed to encourage users to upgrade to Windows 11.
- Purchase a new PC: If your current device is aging, consider buying a new PC compatible with Windows 11. Newer computers typically offer better performance, enhanced security, and improved productivity. Remember to back up your data regularly to prevent data loss during the transition.
